Since 2017, self-taught bladesmith and knifemaker Ryan Godwin of 1908 Custom Knives has been hand-crafting one of a kind pieces in his Pensacola, Florida workshop. Taking a hands‑on‑every‑aspect approach, Ryan strives to create works of art that are meant to be used and made to last a lifetime.

Ryan applies his passion for science and nature into his art. Notably, he has been working to develop a process for semi‑controlled spalting of wood; resulting in some unique handle material you won’t likely find anywhere else.

We use carbon steels to create our blades. The specific alloy and in-house heat treatment schedule are based on the intended use of finished product.

For our handles, we choose to use local, sustainably sourced woods and reclaimed lumber over exotic, imported woods. Fresh-cut logs (usually collected from yard waste piles) are aged/spalted, cut, dried, and stabilized in house. This lengthy process ensures high quality, aesthetically pleasing results with wood options you won’t normally find with other makers. In many cases, we can even use materials that you provide to create a truly unique and sentimental piece.
